Electrical Engineer Project Manager

JOB TITLE: Electrical Engineer/Designer – Optics or Electronics Disciplines

LOCATION: Ann Arbor Technical Center

REPORTS TO: Advanced Product R & D Engineering Manager

DEPARTMENT: Lighting Products

DURATION: 3 month minimum assignment but could be a direct hire for the right candidate

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a product development position that also requires an emphasis on optics or electronics development. The Technical Specialist works with our client's Sales, manufacturing plants, and engineering team to provide new product technology and product-specific optical or electronics solutions for lighting systems for our OEM customers. The Electrical Engineer/Designer Technical Specialist is the project manager responsible for product development, process development, and validation of optical or electronic lighting sub-systems, with an emphasis on LED-based systems. This individual will utilize their experience to;

-Meeting and exceed customer subjective requirements:

-Optics – beam patterns, uniformity of illuminated surfaces, and homogeneity of illuminated components, etc.

-Electrical – electromagnetic interference-free operation, LED/circuit board thermal levels, and interface to vehicle control modules, etc.

-Evaluate tradeoffs in concept designs using CAD, predictive engineering, value analysis/value engineering, testing, and simultaneous engineering with the manufacturing plants.

-Provide the necessary information to support designs that can be manufactured cost effectively while meeting customer requirements including performance and durability.

-Provide optics prescriptions or electronic driver circuitry that perform in production tooled components as predicted by simulations on a First Time Through basis to avoid tooling changes and program timing effects.

-Follow the project through customer testing and into production.

The Technical Specialist will also be expected to keep up to date with current technology in this field and to identify future opportunities.





Engineering Degree Physics, Lighting, and Optics/Electrical

  • Perform all the functions of a Product/Research Engineer in their field of expertise.
  • Participate and lead development projects identified by Lighting Technology Management.
  • Has strong technical leadership capabilities and is self-directed. Proven capable of managing large projects and has the ability to direct the activities of the project.
  • Works with suppliers to develop materials to meet the client's needs.
  • Function as Subject Matter Expert point of contact to electronics suppliers.
  • Perform other technology and commercial functions as assigned.

  • Maintains/creates generic technical presentations regarding specific areas of expertise that can be utilized by commercial teams to highlight the client's technical ability and knowledge base.

  • Determine new analytical methods and product test equipment necessary to meet market demands.
  • Specific Technical Expertise
  • Optics – working knowledge of:
  • Discrete light sources (HID, LED, halogen, incandescent).


  • Light transmitting media (light pipes, guides, etc.).
  • Electrical – working knowledge of:
  • Electronic circuitry (design, component selection, simulations, LED drivers, microcontrollers and communication protocols, etc.).
  • Printed Circuit Boards (industry, different types, layout, assembly, methods, etc).
  • Component operating limits (LED junction temperatures and lumen output, voltage/current limits, etc.).
  • Maintain intimate knowledge of applications, materials, designs (globally and competitively), the marketplace, and trends in the industry affecting the product.
  • Excellent understanding and working knowledge of ALL customer specifications.
  • Support other engineers, plants, etc. as a technical resource when specific expertise is required.
  • Each employee has the authority to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to the product, process, and quality system and has the authority to stop further work on non-conforming suspect products until the deficiency or conditions have been corrected.
