Sr. Mechanical Project Engineer

In support of our client, a global building supply manufacturer, ResourceTek is currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Project Engineer to work in an onsite Owners Representative capacity. The Mechanical Engineer will work with a Project Engineering Team to ensure the integrity of heavy industrial capital projects and equipment commissioning. This is a project-based assignment near Ranson, West Virginia with an expected duration of 9-12 months. The expectation of this position is to be in the field 75% of the day to assure mechanical work is being conducted as per specifications.

The Project Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for everyday project activities, quality control and project delivery, overseeing all phases of the project from design to contract documents and specification development, shop drawing checks, site oversight, and project closeout. He or She works as a member of the Project Management Team which is responsible to plan and oversee the project to ensure a timely and cost-effective outcome. Ensure the project is constructed in a safe, ethical manner and in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. Working in coordination with other Project Managers, the Mechanical Engineer will have direct responsibility for leading the mechanical design, mechanical installation, and mechanical commissioning of the manufacturing expansion to ensure a successful project.

Sr. Mechanical Project Engineer Duties & Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Engineering of building systems and capital equipment related to heavy industrial manufacturing or other industrial construction.
  • Responsible for managing the mechanical engineering scope of work and technical specifications including the spec’ing, design, and installation of heavy industrial manufacturing equipment.
  • Working with outside engineering firms, vendors, and contractors during mechanical project installations including startup and commissioning activities.
  • Recommend hiring and termination of subcontractors / vendors including negotiations, sub agreements, material agreements and PO’s.
  • Management of subcontractors to ensure compliance with mechanical construction standards.
  • Complete understanding of the contract including company’s contractual obligations and the supplier’s obligations
  • Ensure timely notices as required to protect the company’s interests regarding extra work, design changes, delays, impacts, etc., which requires independent contract analysis
  • Project submittals, process RFIs & shop drawings, as required
  • Responsible for the safety of all assigned employees and subcontractors to ensure the safe execution of all activities, including the strict adherence to company safety policies and programs through the communication and enforcement of the company’s Safety and Health Management Program, including the ability to independently stop work for a safety violation or suspected safety violation

Sr. Mechanical Project Engineer Skills & Abilities

  • Functions effectively as part of a team
  • Highly organized, detail-driven, and conscientious
  • Proficient in current version of AutoCAD and Microsoft Products
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinates, writes and/or edits specifications as applies to mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrates good management and leadership skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical standards as applicable to construction and manufacturing

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor level degree in Engineering is highly desired along with 7+ years of proven experience in Mechanical Engineering in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Applicants without a BS in Engineering must have 10 plus years of hands-on, applicable heavy industrial mechanical engineering experience.

Work Environment/Job Conditions

This job is performed both in the office and in the field. Field work requires experience and confidence working in and around heavy industrial equipment, systems and conditions is required. Activities and responsibilities require frequent sitting (often working on a computer), frequent driving, flying, walking, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching. Due to computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
